‘The Beauty Detox Solution’ – Part 1

After a sunny summer spent wearing pretty dresses, sipping cocktails/wine, and eating gorgeous food, it wasn’t much fun struggling to breathe in my ‘comfortable’ pair of jeans last week. Ugh. I think it might be time for another round of detox.
As a ‘foodie’, I don’t have the desire or discipline to ‘diet’ so my focus will be on eating right and making better choices.
In need for some serious inspiration and guidance, I turned to ‘The Beauty Detox Solution’, a book by celebrity nutritionist and beauty expert, Kimberly Snyder. I am not even half way through the book and seem to have already found the motivation to make some changes.
Here are some pearls of wisdom I have gathered from ‘The Beauty Detox Solution” so far.
Eat more plant protein
Snyder recommends cutting out animal protein completely. The human body has to work harder to digest animal protein resulting in important ‘beauty energy’ being wasted on the process. Snyder recommends a diet rich in plant-based proteins such as lentils, beans, quinoa, millet, green vegetables, nuts etc. My diet is mostly vegetarian but I do enjoy my share of animal protein! Having said that, I have often contemplated turning vegetarian and perhaps Snyder will convince me to make a full switch over to the other side. Either way, I will be making a conscious effort to add more plant protein to my diet.
Acid vs Alkaline
Snyder talks a lot in ‘The Beauty Detox Solution’ about the body’s acid-alkaline balance and how the foods we eat impact health and beauty. According to Snyder, the ideal balance for the human body is 80% alkaline and 20% acid. Very alkaline foods are fruit, most vegetables (except the starchy kind) and sprouts. Very acidic foods include alcohol, animal protein, dairy, caffeine :(, refined sugars, nicotine, antibiotics…..you get the picture! Not sure about you but my ratio is definitely rather skewed at the moment and I will be doing my best to change that ASAP!!!
Beauty Food Pairings
Snyder devotes much time to the concept of ‘beauty food pairing’ – eating the right combination of foods to boost overall health and beauty. I have to say this has been the most enlightening aspect of the book so far. I never knew that egg whites with whole wheat toast are a ‘improper food pairing’. And a tuna sushi roll or a turkey on whole wheat sandwich are also far from ideal. I always thought that these were healthy options but according to Snyder, ‘low fat’ foods are also guilty of slowing down digestion. Snyder has many suggestions for food pairings (protein + starch is BAD, mixing 2 starches is OKAY etc) and it will be tough but I am definitely going to give it a shot and see how I get on.
Right. So it is clear I’ve got lots of changes to make. And I am nowhere near done with the book yet! Yikes.
I love a good beauty book and ‘The Beauty Detox Solution’ has definitely been an informative read so far. 🙂 Feel free to visit Kimberly Snyder’s blog for more health and beauty tips.
Will definitely write Part 2 of this post once I finish the book. Until then, please wish me luck! 😉

Perfect, being vegetarien, I am fully convinced, now need to care for right combination of food. Thank you Reema for educating us about the food intake.Looking forward for the 2nd part.
Yes, def helps to be a vegetarian. I’m trying to cut meat out completely – did well this week. Let’s see how long it lasts! Will definitely write the 2nd part when I’m done reading the book.
