San Lorenzo, Wimbledon

I have always been curious about San Lorenzo, a local Italian restaurant located steps away from Wimbledon station. After 5 years of living in the neighbourhood, we finally decided to give it a try a few weeks ago.

San Lorenzo’s first restaurant in Knightsbridge celebrated 50 years last year and the Wimbledon branch has been around for 45 years.  Believe it or not, they also have one in Mumbai – Maritime by San Lorenzo at the Taj Land’s End.

I was in the mood for pasta that night but sadly, I was a little disappointed in their limited pasta menu. Mr. A had heard through his colleagues that the pizzas here were great so unable to decide on a pasta, we decided to share a rather child-friendly pizza meal with our little one who was joining us that night.

As we waited for our pizza to arrive, I noticed San Lorenzo filling up with many regular, local diners who were clearly well acquainted with the restaurant and the staff. The owner, Ghigo Berni, recognised me from Twitter and came over to introduce himself and chat with us for a while. Ghigo also drew pictures of animals for the little one, who was delighted with the personal attention and  soon declared that this was his favourite restaurant. 🙂

The Pizza Piccante (tomato, mozarella, sausage and chilli) was thin, crisp and delicious.

The dessert was memorable. We ordered the Pannacotta alla Paolo (Vanilla Cream Pudding with Crushed Amaretti) and the home-made chocolate gelato – generous portions and so delicious.

We didn’t just leave with happy bellies that evening. We felt a warm, personal connection with charming San Lorenzo and wondered why it had taken us so long to try it out.

Central Wimbledon has a competitive restaurant scene with new chains opening all the time. It was a pleasure to dine somewhere unique that has been witness to local history and is still going strong. We will definitely be back soon to try more than the pizza. 🙂
