Post-Diwali Detox

You know it is Diwali time when your days and nights are planned around excessive consumption of delicious Indian food and decadent mithai (desserts). This year, Halloween was also thrown into the festivities which meant bonus treats of chocolates, cupcakes and sugary candy. Aaaahhh!

I am not kidding – sweet things were literally pouring out of  every corner of my kitchen ALL weekend long. I have had more than enough and my body is craving a post-Diwali detox. Here are my tips for anyone else out there feeling bloated, tired, sluggish, and full of sweets!

GOODBYE SUGAR

I am finally at the point where I can’t stand the sight of desserts so hopefully this will be an easy challenge to overcome. The proper way to do a sugar detox would be to drop ALL sugar (including fruits)  for a few days to cut the body’s dependence on this seriously addictive drug. I don’t think I can cut out fruit completely so instead, I will also be replacing sweets with delicious fat-busting berries for an easy & healthy treat.

DRINK MORE WATER

I am usually really good about my water intake but have let that slide over the past week. Too much sugar  means the body needs a LOT more water than normal. A friend posted this Daily Mail article (click to read) on Facebook last week about a woman who drank 3 litres of water each day as an experiment that produced the most amazing results. Have a read and I can guarantee you will reach for a bottle of water immediately. It has certainly served as inspiration for me to simply drink more water and flush out all the sugary toxins from my body.

EAT RAW

Indian sweets and festive foods are rich & creamy, filled with ghee or deep-fried. Delicious & mostly vegetarian but extremely unhealthy.  Some of you may remember my review of ‘The Beauty Detox Solution’ by Kimberly Snyder. The book helped me make significant changes to my lifestyle such as giving up meat and eating more raw foods. I was doing really well until the festive season started but it shames me to realise that I haven’t had any fresh, raw vegetables for over a week now – whoops! It is time to go raw again and making a conscious effort to eat more uncooked greens would be a good way to get back on track.

These are a few simple changes I  am making NOW for a successful post-Diwali cleanup.  Anyone else joining me?

Yes, sharing the wealth with neighbours is a great idea! I have been feeding all the sweets to Rayaan so I don’t eat them – he is a bit shocked by my generosity but very pleased.
