Wishing all my readers celebrating the Chinese New Year this weekend a very happy and prosperous year of the horse!

Our friends Chris and Emma invited us to celebrate Chinese New Year with their friends over a dim sum/yum cha feast this weekend. The big lunch was in the elegant private dining area at Grand Imperial restaurant in the Grosvenor Hotel. The location couldn’t have been more convenient than literally next to Victoria station – there is an entrance to the hotel from the station itself.

Dim Sum means ‘touch the heart’ in Cantonese and refers to small, bite sized food (either steamed or deep-fried) served traditionally as a snack with tea. Eating dim sum at a restaurant is known as yum cha which means ‘drinking tea’. A dim sum feast isn’t exactly a new year tradition but there is just something about a long, lazy lunch with a large group that makes it all feel so festive. Our friend Chris mentioned that prawns and noodles are a traditional staple on Chinese New Year with prawns representing happiness and noodles, longevity. We certainly had enough of both at the Grand Imperial!

Our grand dim sum prix fix menu was a winner in both quality and quantity.  From steamed pork buns to a variety of steamed dumplings; the tasty stir-fried turnip cake and the deep-fried black cod spring roll (YUM); the selection was never-ending. Braised noodles with mushrooms along with Hong Kong style ‘Yang Zhou’ fried rice were a tasty supplement to the generous dim sum feast and just when we thought it was all done, out came more dim sum…

Needless to say, the January detox went out the window today. I suppose that is okay though as it is technically February now. 😉

Our party of 20 (not including the kids) occupied the entire private dining area at Grand Imperial. Major kudos to the staff for managing a fabulous service while constantly dodging a grand total of 8 toddlers on an apple juice induced sugar high.

The decor, ambience, service and top quality food all added up to make a very special and memorable experience at Grand Imperial. I highly recommend Grand Imperial to anyone looking for excellent Chinese food around Victoria station.
